Gastronomy 101: Toronto’s Finest $5 Food Crawl

Canada Canon S110 Digital Food Gastronomy 101 Toronto

Last December K and I decided to try out Toronto’s Finest $5 Food Crawl. It entitles us to a featured $5 dish from 10 participating restaurants. I’d say that it was a really good way for us to try out new places to eat, not to mention to return to the ones that I’ve been to, as with the case of Glory Hole Doughnuts and Dirty Bird.

In order for us to manage to complete all 10 stops we decided to pack some of the food to-go, and visited the restaurants based from the location. For example, when we went around College and Spadina, we opted to have the Baked Shopped -> Fancy Franks -> Dirty Bird route; we had the desserts and the chicken and waffles to go while we ate inside Fancy Franks.

With the exception of one unpleasant situation with one of the restaurants the overall food passport experience was great. If the TO guys and gals pull this off again this year we will surely participate. 🙂

Baked Shoppe‘s (859 College Street) Bake Shoppe Bar Sampler – Mini Brownie, Pecan Square, Carmelita Bar, Ruffles Square, S’mores Bar, Magic Square. Patissiere even advised us on how to store the bars. 🙂

Fancy Franks‘ (326 College Street) Frankie Goes to Buffalo – Panko Fried Weiner, Chicken Bacon, Carrots, Celery, Blue Cheese Dressing, Buffalo Wing Sauce. We ordered the cajun fries on the side and we regret nothing.

Dirty Bird‘s (79 Kensington Avenue) The Mini ODB – Boneless Chicken Thigh, Mini Waffle, Syrup, Dirty Sauce and Chives. Interestingly I enjoyed this more than the first meal I had there last summer.

Junked Food Co.‘s (1256 Dundas Street West) Finest Smash Bag – Doritos, layered with Fresh Iceberg Lettuce, Cheddar Cheese, Junked Pico, topped with Potato Tots, Sour Cream, Chili Sauce. K had the ruffles instead of the Doritos but they’re still both good!

Queen Margherita‘s (772 Dundas Street West) Margherita Pizza – Fior di Latte, Fresh Basil. We waited an HOUR for two pizzas. Not happy.

The Big Chill (566 College Street) Belgian Waffle – with Ice Cream (customers get to choose the ice cream flavour and topping)

Glory Hole Doughnuts‘ (1596 Queen Street West) 3 Mini Doughnuts – Winter Vanilla, Mint Chocolate, Lemon Ricotta. The store ran out of some of the flavours so I got different ones instead.

La Cubana‘s (92 Ossington Avenue) Cuban Medianoche – Molasses Slow Roasted Pork, Ham, Gruyere, Cornichon, Grainy Mustard, Chipotle Mayo on a House Made Soft Bun. I ordered the drink separately (which was VERY good btw).

Cut the Cheese‘s (2901 Dundas Street West) Classic Mac’N’Cheese – with Aged Cheddar + 1 Side

Holy Chuck Burger‘s (1450 Yonge Street) Double Cheeseburger.
